Relative cost of UGC from freelance creators, platforms, agencies and performance pricing

"How much does a UGC agency cost?" is one of the first questions every DTC founder asks, and one of the hardest to answer from the outside. Agency pricing pages are rare, the models vary a lot, and the cheapest option per video is often the most expensive per winning ad.

This guide breaks down what you'll actually pay across the main options in 2026, what's included at each level, and how to compare them properly.

The short answer

There are four main ways to buy UGC, and they price very differently:

  • Freelance creators (direct): pay per video. Cheapest per asset, but you do all the strategy, briefing, management and editing.

  • Creator platforms and marketplaces: a subscription or platform fee plus creator costs. You still own most of the strategy and editing.

  • Flat-fee UGC agencies: a monthly retainer for a set number of finished ads, usually including strategy, creators and editing.

  • Performance-based agencies: lower or no upfront fees, with pricing tied to the ad spend or revenue the creative drives.

Four ways to buy UGC: freelance creators, creator platforms, flat-fee agencies and performance agencies

What freelance UGC creators charge

Industry benchmarks for 2026 put the average UGC video at roughly $150 to $300, with a median around $175. Beginners often charge around $100, and experienced creators with a strong portfolio can charge $500 or more.

The base rate is rarely the whole bill. Common add-ons include:

  • Usage rights for paid ads: often 30 to 50% of the base rate.

  • Raw footage: often another 30 to 50%.

  • Whitelisting or partnership ad access: commonly around 30% of the base rate per month.

  • Hook variations: around $50 each.

  • Rush delivery: 25 to 50% extra.

A "$150 video" with ad rights, raw files and three hooks can easily become a $420 video, before anyone writes a script or edits it into an ad.

What creator platforms cost

Creator platforms sit in the middle. You get access to a pool of creators and tools to manage briefs and payments, but strategy and editing are mostly on you.

As one example, Insense's published pricing (reported in August 2026) runs about $350 to $500 per month for self-service plans, plus a 10% marketplace fee on every creator payment, and creator fees themselves are billed separately. Its managed packages were reported at roughly $2,800 per month for 6 videos up to $4,200 for 18. Other platforms work similarly: low entry cost, with total spend growing as you add creators.

What UGC agencies cost

Agency pricing depends mostly on volume (how many finished ads per month), what's included, and the pricing model.

Flat-fee retainers

Most agencies sell monthly packages that range from the low four figures to five figures per month. What separates a good package from an expensive one is what's inside it. A strong package typically includes:

  • Creative strategy based on your ad account and your competitors

  • Creator sourcing, vetting and management

  • Scripts or talking-point briefs

  • Professional editing into ad-ready cuts

  • Hook variations for testing

  • Full licensing rights and raw files

Also check the commitment. Many agencies require three months or more.

Performance-based pricing

A growing number of agencies tie fees to results, most often a percentage of the ad spend running on their creative. Offers around 10% of spend are becoming more common. These models usually require a meaningful monthly ad budget and a real testing budget, because the agency only earns when ads scale. We explain the shift in why the flat-fee UGC retainer is dying.

The hidden costs nobody quotes

When comparing options, price the work that doesn't show up on the invoice:

  • Your team's time. Writing briefs, reviewing drafts, chasing creators and approving edits can easily eat 10+ hours a week if you buy raw content.

  • Editing. Raw creator footage is not an ad. Someone has to cut hooks, add captions and build variations.

  • Strategy. Without a clear testing plan, cheap videos become an expensive library of ads that never scaled.

  • Reshoots. Unvetted creators mean more unusable footage.

How to compare options the right way

Stop comparing cost per video. Compare these instead:

  1. Cost per tested concept. How many distinct, well-researched ideas get into market each month?

  2. Cost per winning ad. Over a quarter, what did you spend to find each ad that actually scaled?

  3. Total cost of ownership. Fees, creator costs, rights, editing and your team's hours combined.

A $150 video that never scales is more expensive than a $500 ad that runs profitably for three months. To model your own numbers, try our UGC calculator.

Which option fits which brand

  • Early-stage, small budget: a few freelance creators or a self-serve platform, with the founder doing strategy.

  • Growing brand with steady Meta spend: an agency that brings strategy, creators and editing together, so your team isn't the bottleneck.

  • Scaling brand with heavy spend: a performance-aligned partner, or a hybrid with an in-house team supported by an agency for volume and testing.
